Easy Orchid Flowers - Coelogyne Cristata

I define “easy” orchids as those that can be grown indoors in mild climates in homes that have the heating on during the daytime in winter.

This is one of the most favored orchid species of all time. Plants in cultivation today can often be traced to importations from India dating back to 1822. A strong, robust grower, within a few years it can assume gigantic proportions. However, continual division of the plant will maintain it at a manageable level. A large plant positively froths with big, crisp white blooms, which are produced freely in early spring and last three to four weeks. On a sizeable plant, a slight fragrance can be detected. Grow it in cool conditions, in good light all winter. In the early spring the flower spikes, with up to six blooms to a spike, will show from the base of the mature pseudobulbs. The developing buds start off looking brownish. Just when you think they are dying off, they change to glistening white, prior to opening in all their glory.

Flower Size: 3 inches (8cm) across

Flower Spike: 6 inches (15cm)

Plant Spread: 10 inches (25cm)

Pot Size: 4 inches (10cm)
