Easy Orchid Flowers - Lemboglossum Bictoniense

I define “easy” orchids as those that can be grown indoors in mild climates in homes that have the heating on during the daytime in winter.

Once included in the genus Odontoglossum, this handsome species from Guatemala was introduced into cultivation in 1835 and first flowered at Bicton in Devon, England. It produces green pseudobulbs and makes an attractive, easily grown plant that blooms freely during the summer. As it matures, two flower spikes, each bearing twelve to fifteen flowers, are often carried by one pseudobulb. The flowers have narrow green sepals and petals barred with brown, and a white to pink heart-shaped lip. They will last for four to five weeks. The best clones have produced some very desirable hybrids.

Flower Size: 1 1/2 inches (4cm) across

Flower Spike: 2 1/2 feet inches (68cm)

Plant Height: 10 inches (25cm)

Pot Size: 5 inches (12cm)
