Easy Orchids - Cymbidium Summer Pearl ‘Shirley’
I define “easy” orchids as those that can be grown indoors in mild climates in homes that have the heating on during the daytime in winter.
Extensive breeding with selected species has given rise to a wonderful range of summer-flowering cymbidiums, unknown half a century ago, extending the season to almost the whole year. Among these recently introduced varieties white is a much sought-after color, and this delightful clone of C. Summer Pearl, introduced in 1984, has the right qualities, plus a combination of white sepals and petals with a deeply margined red lip, which make it one of the top varieties. The plant is compact, and this, together with the freedom with which it blossoms (it produces a dozen or more flowers that last six to eight weeks) makes it a suitable candidate for growing as a houseplant.
Flower Size: 3 inches (8cm) across.
Flower Spike: 2 1/2 feet (75cm).
Plant Height: 25 inches (63cm).
Pot Size: 8 inches (20cm).
