Easy Orchids - Lycaste Lasioglossa

I define “easy” orchids as those that can be grown indoors in mild climates in homes that have the heating on during the daytime in winter.

This lovely, distinct species, which has been in cultivation since 1871, comes from Guatemala and has been used widely for hybridizing, contributing color to the modern hybrids. It blooms in the spring, producing its sharply three-sided blooms singly on spikes held above the foliage, which is shed at about the same time as flowering commences. The outside sepals of the flowers are brown and the two lateral petals yellow, with the small central lip frilled and similarly colored. The blooms last for around five weeks. The plant enjoys cool conditions, but needs a dry winter rest following the growing season.
