Easy Orchids - Odontioda Quedlinburg

I define “easy” orchids as those that can be grown indoors in mild climates in homes that have the heating on during the daytime in winter.

An exquisitely patterned hybrid raised in Germany in 1997, this orchid is favored for its primrose-yellow flowers overlaid with colorful red markings as if fro an artist’s brush. Although this is an Odontioda hybrid, which contains genes from Cochlioda that usually impart a rich red coloring, in this instance more influence has been exerted by the Odontoglossum side, which the flowers resemble more closely. The plant is typical of the latter, with neat pseudobulbs and two long, narrow leaves. The spikes are taller than the foliage and can each carry up to eight good-size flowers. These will bloom at various times of year, but mainly during the summer months when they will last for around six weeks.
