Easy Orchids - Paphiopedilum Delophyllum

I define “easy” orchids as those that can be grown indoors in mild climates in homes that have the heating on during the daytime in winter.

Two distinct species, P. delenatii from Vietnam and P. glaucophyllum from Malaysia, are combined in this old primary hybrid, which was first raised in Britain in 1940. The plant is a robust grower that does best in intermediate temperatures with no direct sun. The blooms - which appear in succession on the spike, greatly extending the flowering season - are produced mainly in the winter, when individually they will last for six weeks. The plant produces attractive slightly mottled green foliage and can be divided when large enough. Always keep it in as small a pot as possible: in common with all paphiopedilums, these orchids make scanty root systems, and if over-potted there is a risk of over-watering.

Flower Size: 4 inches (10cm) across

Flower Spike: 1 foot (30cm)

Plant Height: 4 inches (10cm)

Pot Size: 3 inches (8cm)
