Easy Orchids - Sophrolaeliocattleya Madge Fordyce ‘Red Orb’
I define “easy” orchids as those that can be grown indoors in mild climates in homes that have the heating on during the daytime in winter.
This compact-growing dazzler takes its name from the three separate genera that produced it in 1971 in the United States: Sophronitis provides the brilliant color and small pseudobulbs, with Laelia and Cattleya contributing to the hybrid vigor. The plant soon becomes multi-leaded, enabling it to be grown into a specimen producing a mass of single blooms lasting three to four weeks on short flower spikes during the summer. It needs cool to intermediate temperatures and will do well on a light windowsill, but it must be kept fairly dry while flowering.

I just got myself an Slc Little Precious x Mahalo Jack. (Expect Yellow and Pink) I can find no fault with the plant, it’s really healthy and has several new growths from its base. I’m hoping for flowers soon but it’s a bit late season. Glad to know what I have to offer for climate is what it will do well in. Cheers, A. in Gloucester Ma.
