Fairly Easy Orchids - Dendrobium Longicornu

I define “fairly easy” orchids as those that, while suitable for a beginner, may not be quite as tolerant of less than ideal conditions as the “easy” orchids.

Discovered in India in 1830, this dainty, small-growing species produces slender canes leafed along their whole length and covered with small, dense, black-brown hairs. The trumpet-shaped flowers, unusual in the genus for their shape, do not open fully and carry a spur at the back where the sepals are fused. The lip, like the rest of the flower, is pure white, has deep orange-yellow grooves along its length, and is frilled at the edge. Several flowers arise from the top portions of the older canes and will last for three weeks in mid-to late spring. The plant needs a dry rest period in the winter but must not be allowed to shrivel. During this time, check it regularly and water occasionally if necessary.

Flower Size: 2 1/2 inches (6cm) across

Flower Spike: 10 inches (25cm)

Pot Size: 3 inches (8cm)
