Propagation of Sympodial Orchids

Most orchids belong here. At the base there is a creeping rhizome which joins together the pseudobulbs.

These are swollen stem bases from which the leaves and the flower stalks arise. New pseudobulbs appear as growth progresses; old pseudobulbs turn brown after flowering has finished and these backbulbs remain for several years.

You can divide the plant at repotting time; each clump should contain at least three leafy pseudobulbs and these should be posted up in the usual way. Staking may be necessary. Think before deciding to divide your orchid instead of repotting. Division will give you more plants, but you will miss at least one flowering season.
