Easy Orchid Flower - Brassia Arania Verde

I define “easy” orchids as those that can be grown indoors in mild climates in homes that have the heating on during the daytime in winter.

The brassias are the well-known spider orchid, so called for their extraordinarily long, think petals and sepals, which are held out stiffly. The lip is large by comparison, but also narrow and pointed. The flowers are extremely fragrant and are produced in long sprays of up to ten blooms. They are largely green, as seen here, with rich chocolate-brown barring along the petals and sepals. The plant resembles an Odontoglossum, with which genus it will interbreed, and has robust pseudobulbs and two broadly oval leaves. The flower spikes appear in late spring as the pseudobulbs mature, and the blooms will last for five to six weeks in intermediate temperatures. This hybrid was bred in 1990.

Flower Size: 10 inches (25cm) across

Flower Spike: 2 feet (60cm)

Plant Height: 20 inches (50cm)

Pot Size: 7 inches (18cm)
