Easy Orchids - Doritaenopsis Coral Harbor

I define “easy” orchids as those that can be grown indoors in mild climates in homes that have the heating on during the daytime in winter.

This is a bigeneric hybrid, the result of crossing Phalaenopsis side is dominant, the small percentage of Doritis genes showing the vigor of the plant and the richness of the deeply colored lip. This hybrid was raised in California in 1991 and is one of many successful similar clones. Note that the flower spike, bearing up to a dozen blooms, arches over and will need to be tied to a supporting cane just below the first flowers. The blooms can appear at any time of year and will last for seven to eight weeks. Lacking pseudobulbs, this plant must be watered throughout the year and should be grown in a warm room well out of direct sun. It could also be grown in a shaded greenhouse.
