Fairly Easy Orchids - Dendrobium Ruby Beauty

I define “fairly easy” orchids as those that, while suitable for a beginner, may not be quite as tolerant of less than ideal conditions as the “easy” orchids.

This is a superb example of a hard-caned Dendrobium hybrid, of a type that is widely grown all over the world. Raised in 1990, these orchids are extremely tolerant and adaptable to various climates, but bear in mind that they are tropical plants and in their native environment, they make ideal garden plants. A mature plant will produce two to three flower spikes, each with about six or eight flowers, from the top portion of the elongated pseudobulbs during the fall. The pseudobulbs are leafed all along their length, and the leaves are retained during the winter, unlike in many dendrobiums which are deciduous. These hybrids are grown for the cut-flower trade in Singapore and Thailand and are exported far and wide. In flower shops and elsewhere they are known simply as Singapore orchids, and are sold in a multitude of colors just about everywhere in the world.

Flower Size: 2 3/4 inches (7cm) across
